Depression Care in Iowa City
Depression is not a character flaw and not something to push through alone. We provide careful, individualized treatment for adults.
What is depression?
Depression is more than sadness. It is an episode of illness that changes mood, energy, sleep, and thinking, and it can settle in as numbness or exhaustion rather than tears. It is one of the most common conditions we treat, and one of the most treatable.
What can depression look like?
An episode usually involves several of these, most of the day, for weeks at a time:
Common symptoms
- Low mood, or losing interest in things that used to matter
- Exhaustion that sleep does not fix
- Sleeping or eating much more or less than usual
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Feeling worthless or excessively guilty
- Moving or thinking noticeably slower
- Thoughts of death or self-harm. If this is you, call or text 988 now
How is depression treated?
Medication
Antidepressant options differ in how they work and how they feel. We choose based on your full treatment history, so past partial responses inform the next decision instead of restarting trial-and-error.
Therapy
Evidence-based therapy treats depression on its own and strengthens medication response. We help you find the right combination.
