Schizophrenia Spectrum Care in Iowa City

Psychotic disorders are treatable medical conditions. Steady, consistent care makes the difference, and that is what we build with you.

What are schizophrenia spectrum disorders?

The schizophrenia spectrum covers conditions where the brain's handling of perception and thought changes, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and related psychotic disorders. These are medical conditions, not character flaws, and with the right treatment many people manage them well and live full lives.

What can it look like?

Symptoms vary widely from person to person and over time:

Changes in perception and thought

  • Hearing or seeing things others do not
  • Fixed beliefs that feel absolutely real
  • Thoughts that feel disorganized or hard to follow
  • Growing suspicion of familiar people

Changes in daily life

  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Flattened emotion or motivation
  • Trouble keeping up with work or school
  • Neglecting sleep, meals, or self-care

How are schizophrenia spectrum disorders treated?

Diagnosis first

Psychotic symptoms have many possible causes, including mood episodes, substances, and medical illness. We take a careful history before settling on a diagnosis, because the diagnosis drives every treatment decision that follows.

Treatment

Antipsychotic medication is the foundation, chosen and adjusted deliberately with attention to side effects and what has worked before. Around it we build steady follow-up, supportive therapy, and coordination with family and other clinicians when you want them involved.
