Psychiatric care in Iowa City
Mind & Matter Behavioral Health provides psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and psychotherapy for adults in Iowa City and, through telehealth, across Iowa.
What psychiatric care includes here
Care begins with a psychiatric evaluation. This is a structured conversation about your current symptoms and your history, including past treatment and any medications you have tried. It ends with a working diagnosis and a treatment plan that you and your prescriber agree on.
When medication is part of the plan, follow-up visits are used for medication management. Your prescriber checks whether a medication is doing its job and whether side effects are tolerable, then adjusts the dose or the prescription based on what you report.
Psychotherapy is also available, alongside medication or on its own. The modalities we offer are dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), existential therapy, and supportive therapy. Which approach makes sense depends on your diagnosis and your goals.
Who provides your care
Kiran Annam, ARNP, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and holds additional board certifications in Family Practice and Acute Care. Kiran is accepting new patients now.
Chris Hawthorne, PA-C (formerly Heck), is a psychiatric physician assistant who will be joining the practice soon. Chris is not yet accepting patients.
There is no physician on staff, and neither provider is a psychiatrist; a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who completed a psychiatry residency. Our prescribers evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe within their licensure, and if your needs call for a different level of care, we will say so and help you find it.
Conditions we evaluate and treat
We evaluate and treat adults, age 18 and older, for ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood disorders, and men's mental health concerns. Treatment for each starts with a careful evaluation, since the plan depends on the diagnosis.

Common questions
Should I see a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner?
A psychiatrist is a physician who completed medical school and a residency in psychiatry; see Who provides your care, above, for our prescribers' credentials. Many people receive psychiatric care from nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and if your needs call for physician-level care, we will tell you and help you find it.
What happens at a first psychiatric appointment?
The first visit is a psychiatric evaluation. Your prescriber asks about your current symptoms and your history, including any medications you have tried before. By the end you should have a working diagnosis and a treatment plan, which may include medication, psychotherapy, or both. You will also know when to follow up.
What is the difference between psychiatric care and seeing a therapist?
A therapist provides psychotherapy and does not prescribe medication. Psychiatric care includes diagnostic evaluation and medication management, and at this practice it also includes psychotherapy: dialectical behavior therapy, existential therapy, and supportive therapy. Some people see both a therapist and a prescriber. If you already have a therapist, you can see us for evaluation and medication management.
Are you accepting new patients right now?
Yes. Kiran Annam, ARNP, PMHNP-BC, is accepting new adult patients for telehealth visits anywhere in Iowa, with in-person visits in Iowa City coming soon. Chris Hawthorne, PA-C, joins the practice soon and is not yet accepting patients. To get started, book through our scheduling page or request a complimentary 15-minute intro call to see whether the practice fits your needs.
